James Vivian’s Love Letter to TCA Peels, AKA Trichloroacetic Acid

One of our favourite options in our Chemical Peel toolkit is certainly TCA. Why? Because it treats a host of different skin concerns like scarring and signs of ageing.
It should come as no surprise to you that we here at The Porehouse AKA James Vivian, are utterly obsessed with the transformative results chemical peels can yield. In fact, it was this love of peels that was the catalyst for James to switch from a career in music to skin. Yes, a peel prompted his very first business, ‘The Travelling Peelsman’.
Up for another fun fact? James’ Mini Cooper currently sports plates that read ‘PEELZ’ – cool right?
The Porehouse is home to a myriad of wonderful chemical peels BUT the one we’re here to gas up today is the TCA Peel.
TCA or Trichloroacetic Acid is a deeply exfoliating chemical peel that reduces the signs of; pigmentation, acne scarring, deeper lines and wrinkles, leaving behind naturally refined, clearer and brighter skin. The acid is absorbed into the deeper layers of the skin, targeting the things listed above and leaving a brighter, more evened complexion (hooray!). TCA also reduces ongoing pigment production, helping to improve the appearance of sun-damaged skins.
Who is the TCA Peel best for?
This particular treatment is ideal for clients looking to reduce visible signs of ageing, pigment and scarring. It's also topically applied which means it can be a great option for skins who don't do well with light-based modalities.
Who doesn’t TCA agree with?
A great question! Those who are pregnant or breastfeeding (congrats!) cannot undergo a TCA Peel during these times. Also, those who are on oral vitamin A and those with an active cold sore and will need to wait.
If you’re not up for a few days of downtime, perhaps this isn’t the right treatment for you! We can explore a TCA Peel down the track, if and when it’s suitable.
What can I expect if I come in for a TCA Peel at James Vivian?
You’ll come in for a short but sweet appointment, where one of our Dermal Clinicians will prep your skin before swiping on the TCA cocktail.
Many clients experience medium to intense heat and discomfort, with the skin often still feeling warm and tender post-treatment. We can help alleviate discomfort during treatment by fanning or tapping the skin.
You’ll be sent home with strict instructions on what to apply (and what not to apply) to your skin following the peel. Namely, no actives or strenuous exercise for a little while and very important sun safety to keep everything as it should be.
Due to the deep nature of the TCA Peel, you’ll experience a few days of downtime which will consist of redness, dryness and shedding. It’s all part of the process and we’ll be with you to hold your hand throughout (especially to ensure you’re not tempted to peel away any flaky skin!).
Any pigment we’re targeting will become darker before it lightens, but again – nothing to be concerned about!
