The J.V. Story
I started in music, then took a part-time job at Aesop and fell in love with the world of service, ritual, and the small details that make people feel cared for. The bottles helped too.
Music, Aesop, and the moment it all clicked
Around that time, I had a facial that shifted something in me. Not in a “nice glow” way. In a “this is what I’m meant to do” way. It was the first time I really understood how powerful skin care can be when it’s done with skill, intention, and devoted attention to the person in front of you.
I left music, studied beauty therapy, and went all in.
Not long after, I realised I wanted more depth, more science and a better understanding of how skin behaves and changes over time. So I studied health science at Victoria University, and that became the foundation of how I work to this day: skin is not superficial, and neither is what we do here.
The Travelling Peelsman years
This was the era of the peel mobile. A boot full of professional-grade acids, a diary full of appointments, and a lot of real-world learning.
Treating clients in their homes taught me something important early on: results matter, but so does how people feel during the process. You don’t get to hide behind a “clinic experience” when you’re working in someone’s home. You have to be good at your craft, and you have to be good with people.
A full-circle Toorak moment
Eventually, I outgrew the mobile days and opened my first clinic in Windsor, then moved to Prahran, where we spent seven years growing the James Vivian name.
In 2020, we moved to Toorak, and the timing felt unexpectedly full-circle. This space previously belonged to my mentor, Maria Vovos, the Skin Therapist who gave me that life-changing facial all those years ago. Taking over the clinic felt like the next chapter arriving at exactly the right time.
What it's become
Not long after, Viviology came to life. It grew out of what I saw every day in the clinic: people overwhelmed by skincare noise, sold too much, and left feeling like they needed a chemistry degree to choose a moisturiser. Viviology is everything you need and nothing you don’t. Straightforward, active-led, and made to fit real life.
That one facial changed my entire trajectory, and somehow it also gave me all of this. A clinic I’m ridiculously proud of, a team I trust with my own skin, and a career that keeps teaching me new things every day. Not bad for a day that started with a cleanser and ended with a life pivot.
And if you are wondering whether the clinic is as it appears online, the answer is yes. Great music, kind people, meaningful skin chats, and the occasional appearance of Miss Tina Toner, who may not have her Grammy yet, but remains committed to a flawless finish.
