Developed by Cutera, LimeLight is a specific type of IPL (intense pulsed light) treatment, a technology that has been used in clinical skincare settings since the 1990s. It is designed to target skin discolouration, including sun damage, freckling, hyperpigmentation, and generalised facial redness.
LimeLight may be suitable for clients seeking to improve the appearance of facial redness and pigmentation irregularities, including sun-induced discolouration and uneven skin tone.
LimeLight may not be suitable if any of the following apply:
Pregnancy.
Use of certain medications, including oral isotretinoin, corticosteroids, blood thinners, or photosensitising medications.
Immune-compromised conditions (e.g. HIV, lupus, scleroderma). History of light sensitivity or previous reactions to light-based treatments. Presence of active cold sores, skin cancer, infections, open wounds, or burns. History of keloid formation, excessive scarring, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Cosmetic injectables within the past two weeks.
Inability to tolerate discomfort or commit to necessary downtime.
Due to the risk of rebound pigmentation, this treatment is not recommended for melasma
LimeLight uses light energy that’s converted into heat to target both redness and unwanted pigmentation in the skin. The heat is absorbed by visible blood vessels and pigment, helping to reduce flushing and fade discolouration. Treated pigment may temporarily darken before gradually lifting to the surface and sloughing away, revealing a more even skin tone over time.
LimeLight treatments can feel intense. Sensations may range from a warm, flicking feeling to more repetitive, hot, and uncomfortable pulses. Heat may linger in the skin for several hours post-treatment. While discomfort levels vary, this is not considered a relaxing treatment experience.
To ensure the best possible outcome from your LimeLight treatment, please follow the guidelines below:
The treatment area must be free of natural and artificial tan.
If you are prone to cold sores, consider using an over-the-counter antiviral prophylactic. Discontinue topical Vitamin A (retinol) products for up to two weeks before treatment.
A skin cancer check must have been completed within the last twelve months. To help minimise swelling or itchiness, you may take two Telfast and two Claratyne daily, starting two days before your appointment
For the first five days post-treatment, or until all post-treatment skin reactions have fully settled, it’s important to support your skin with the following care:
Use only a gentle cleanser morning and night.
Apply a moisturiser or your prescribed post-treatment product as directed.
Avoid direct sun exposure. When outdoors, wear a broad-brimmed hat and apply (and reapply) SPF 50 sunscreen throughout the day.
Refrain from vigorous exercise, saunas, steam rooms, or any heat-based wellness treatments for at least 48 hours. Continue taking two Telfast and two Claratyne daily until visible responses have subsided.
Avoid picking or prematurely removing pigment from the treated area. Sleep with an extra pillow to elevate your head and use cold compresses as needed to reduce heat and swelling.
Following these guidelines will help optimise your results and support a smooth recovery.
Downtime will vary depending on the concern being treated.
When treating redness, downtime may range from no visible response to bruising or swelling lasting up to seven to ten days.
When treating pigmentation, darkening of pigment may occur and can last for up to fourteen days.
Other common responses may include heat, redness, bruising, and swelling. In some cases of prolonged swelling, your clinician may recommend a short course of oral steroids from your GP. Your clinician will follow up after your first session, and we encourage you to contact the clinic if you experience any responses that are outside of the expected range.. Results, downtime and treatment response will vary from person to person
We recommend one to three treatments, spaced four to six weeks apart, followed by a review. Treatment number and intervals will be reviewed by your clinician based on your individual concerns.

To support ongoing results, maintenance treatments may be recommended every six to twelve months. In some cases, your clinician may suggest alternative or supplementary treatments to support long-term skin goals.
In addition to not proceeding with LimeLight, alternative treatments may include diathermy, VBeam, IPL, Laser Vein Therapy, Pico Genesis, Pico Genesis FX, Laser Genesis, Q-Switch, or topical and oral therapies. Your clinician will discuss suitable alternatives with you during consultation to ensure expectations are aligned with what this procedure can reasonably achieve.
